Andrea Watson O’Dell isn’t afraid to take risks. After graduating from Bowling Green State University in 2009, O’Dell and her boyfriend (now husband) moved from Ohio to Wilmington, North Carolina without lining up jobs or an apartment in advance.
“We saved one thousand bucks each, and we packed our tiny cars and drove,” she says. “We wanted to live at the beach.”

GT: It seems like a lot of people experience an “ah ha!” moment for wanting to pursue art. When did you first realize that you wanted to be an artist?
AW: I was able to take a metalwork class [at Bowling Green State University] during my last year of college. It was surprising because I didn’t know what I was looking for or what I wanted to do when I found metalwork. I entered two pieces into the BGSU 2009 Undergrad Art Show and won awards for both. That really encouraged me to pursue metalwork further.
