Photography Background Options

I’m looking forward to opening my Etsy shop in the near future (YAY!) and need to choose a consistent photography style. Which style do you prefer? The beach wood seems to help the jewelry stand out more, but I love how clean and crisp the earrings look against the white. Both would completely change the feel of my Etsy shop, which is why I’m spending a few days before diving into pictures of my newest pieces. My jewelry is generally very minimalistic and overall I strive for a business style that is delicate but earthy. I could always use the beach wood strictly for pieces that include shells and use the white background for all my other work. I’m not sure if I’d enjoy the randomness that would result on my Etsy page though. What do you think? I’d love to hear as many opinions as I can get! 🙂

  1. MY; non artsy fartsy opinion …
    Use the beach wood for those pieces that include shells and
    use the some other very light pastel for the background on all your other work.
    { ? Got a theme color for your web site ? }

    1. Thanks Dad! I’ll have to experiment with some other light-colored backgrounds (like you mentioned) for my other pieces. We’ll see how it looks. Everyone seems to agree that the beachwood looks best for my shell jewelry though, so that’s a great start!

  2. For these earrings the beach wood is better. They stay clean against the white, true, but probably it would be better if the picture is macro, which will change the whole vision, I guess.
    Beautiful pieces!! Wish a lot of success with the shop 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for the feedback! It is greatly appreciated. You mean macro as in, if I took a closer shot? It’s already set at a macro level on the camera itself, but I think I know what you mean. I’ll have to experiment with that! I had in past, but kind of forgot about it recently. Thank you so much for your feedback and kind words!! 🙂

        1. Ahhh yeah I see what you mean. I just bought a Nikon D3100 about a month ago, so I could probably get a pretty good shot. Thanks for the tip! I definitely agree that pictures are the most important on Etsy – hopefully I can really improve my photography skills over the next few weeks (before launching my shop)!

  3. I love the beach wood, but I think your earrings would show up better on a black inset to the terrific card. Right now, the earrings don’t grab your attention; I noticed the wood first. If there was a contrasting color behind the earrings, I think the eye would be drawn there first, then the beach wood, then the intricate lace effect of the card.

    1. Thanks for the feedback Mary Beth! Were you suggesting that I use black earring cards rather than white? I photographed my recent work a few days ago and was happy to see that the jewelry looked best when hanging from the wood (no earring cards at all). I’ll be posting those pictures soon, so you’ll have to let me know what you think! They should be up in the next few days and you’ll be able to find them under “Spring 2013” – at http://andreawatsondesigns.com/collections/earrings/
